Biography
Olivier Lampron is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. His research, in fracture mechanics and additive manufacturing, revolves around a central engineering question: how to predict when and how a part will break, based on what is known about its microstructure and manufacturing process. He develops numerical models of crack propagation, which he compares with experimental measurements, with the aim of linking small-scale damage mechanisms to the strength and toughness observed at the part scale. He works particularly on 3D-printed parts, whose mechanical properties are highly dependent on manufacturing conditions, seeking to predict these properties through process simulation rather than through successive tests.
